The work of Ancient Egyptian Artists can be viewed in the wall paintings, hieroglyphics, sculpture, artefacts, statues, architecture of ancient Egypt. Ancient Egyptian artists used a highly stylized technique that included depictions of numerous symbols. Egyptian Artists used Color Symbolism that conveyed many of the sacred beliefs of the ancient Egyptians. The work of the artists was dictated by strict conformity and to a set of rules that were adhered to for over 3000 years.  This lack of change helped to create a sense of order and balance. It connected generations of dynastic rulers emphasizing the continuity of their line. In a world in which there were over 2000 gods with about 100 major gods it was important for artists to visually convey the identity of each god. The lack of change in ancient Egyptian art allowed artists to produce images of gods that were immediately recognized by the people. The role of an artist in ancient Egypt was to convey an ideal and harmonious version of reality.

Artists worked for an establishment such as the royal household, wealthy government officials or temples. Patrons provided details of the work required, the materials and the place of work.

An artist was considered to be a skilled craftsman. There were no separate words that distinguished a painter from a sculptor or a jeweller form a furniture maker but there was a division of labor.

Hieroglyphics: In ancient Egypt writing and art were inseparable. In the Egyptian language the word "sekh" means writing, drawing, and painting. The paintings that accompanied hieroglyphics in ancient texts, such as the Book of the Dead were the same as larger scale paintings.

Hieroglyphics: Figures and scenes were arranged in horizontal rows. Hieroglyphics are written in horizontal rows or vertical columns and can be read from left to right or from right to left. The direction in which the text is to be read is indicated as the human (or animal) figures always face towards the beginning of the line
