Egyptian Sculpture
Definition: Sculpture is a three-dimensional artwork that is created by artists by shaping hard materials, typically stone, by the process of by carving and chiseling. Egyptian Sculpture is designed to be viewed 'in the round' meaning to be viewed from all sides or in bas relief meaning in low relief in which figures protrude slightly from the background. The word for sculptor in Egyptian was 'sanx' meaning to make come alive.

Their are many examples of ancient Sculpture, the most famous being the Great Sphinx at Giza and the magnificent rock sculptures at Abu Simbel.

Fact 11 on Egyptian Sculpture:

When sculptors prepared to carve a statue they first drew horizontal and vertical guidelines on the surface so the proportions of the figures would be consistent with the established rules and artistic conventions.

These conventions and guidelines that were used by sculptors helped to arrange rows and groups of figures in a unified manner.

The sculptors followed a process that started by drawing guidelines on the surfaces of a block of stone. They then carved and chiseled until the figure of the god or pharaoh emerged. The outline and guidelines were renewed at each stage.

Materials: Granite was plentiful in Upper Egypt and came in a variety of colors including red, black, blue and gray. Granite was used for creating sarcophagi and sculpting statues.
