Fact 1 on 24th Dynasty: | During the previous chaotic succession of self-appointed kings from various regions of Egypt and decline of religious faith and beliefs. The Nubians took the initiative and the cities were forced to band together to contain the military forces of Nubia (aka Kush). | Fact 2 on 24th Dynasty: | A confederation of Egyptian city states was led by a strong leader called Tefnakht from the city of Sais. | Fact 3 on 24th Dynasty: | There were only two kings in this dynasty - Pharaoh Tefnakht I and his son, Pharaoh Bakenranef aka Bocchoris. | Fact 4 on 24th Dynasty: | This short-lived dynasty ruled from Sais in the western part of the Nile Delta in Lower Egypt. | Fact 5 on 24th Dynasty: | Pharaoh Tefnakht led the confederacy to meet the Nubian army led by their commander called Piye who is also known as Piankhi. | Fact 6 on 24th Dynasty: | Piye (Piankhi) ruled from the city of Napata, which was located deep in Nubia, in modern day Sudan | Fact 7 on 24th Dynasty: | Piye (Piankhi) already exercised a strong degree of influence in Thebes and had allies in other Egyptian cities, including the city of Herakleopolis. | Fact 8 on 24th Dynasty: | Pharaoh Tefnakht besieged the city of Herakleopolis and its Nubian allies in the city appealed to Piye for help. | Fact 9 on 24th Dynasty: | Piye responded and achieved a total victory at Herakleopolis. He also conquered the cities of Hermopolis and Memphis. These Nubians were culturally 'Egyptianized' and had adopted its religion, gods, culture and writing. The Nubians saw the conflict as a Holy War and were intent on restoring faith and the purity of the god Amun to the people of Egypt. | Fact 10 on 24th Dynasty: | Pharaoh Tefnakht's confederacy collapsed and he and his allies surrendered to Piye. Tefnakht and the other self-appointed kings allowed to rule their own former domains as vassal governors. | Fact 10 on 24th Dynasty: | Piye (Piankhi) left Egypt and returned to Nubia. The 'vassal governors' took advantage of his absence and ruled as they pleased. | Fact 10 on 24th Dynasty: | Piye died in Nubia and his brother and successor, Shabaka, headed another Nubian military force to Egypt to rectify the situation. | Fact 10 on 24th Dynasty: | Shabaka attacked Sais and defeated Tefnakht's successor King Bakenranef at Sais, in his fifth year of rule. | Fact 10 on 24th Dynasty: | Shabaka executed Bakenranef by burning him alive at the stake, a terrible form of punishment, but especially so for an ancient Egyptian. | Fact 10 on 24th Dynasty: | The death of Bakenranef enabled Shabaka to take control of Egypt and continue the Holy War and return the land of Egypt to its previous glories. |
