Valley of the Queens

Valley of the Queens

The main walkway through the Valley of the Queens, where both ancient Egyptian Queens and Princes were interred. The Valley of the Queens was known in ancient Egypt as Ta-Set-Neferu (the place of the Children of the Pharaoh) and was used between 1550 and 1070 BC for the entombment of the Pharaoh's Royal Family members.

The Aga Khan's Mausoleum and Villa

The Aga Khan III Mohammed Shah died in 1957 and was buried in a a white Italian Carrara marble tomb inside this pink limestone mausoleum. The mausoleum is located on the hill above his villa which can also be seen in this picture next to the bank of the River Nile in Aswan. It is of note that the Aga Khan served as President of the League of Nations from 1937 to 1938.

The necropolis of the princes of Elephantine. The remains of a small temple stands on top of approximately 40 tombs which were excavated into the solid sandstone towards the end of the time period known as the Old Kingdom.

As can be seen in this aerial photograph, the area between between ancient Thebes (Luxor) and the Valley of the Kings is littered with minor tombs of wealthy people who lacked sufficient status and money to have a large tomb in a more prestigious location.
