Ancient Egypt - The Collar Amulet Fact Sheet
The Collar was worn as a protective funerary talisman made of gold for the mummies of wealthy or royal Egyptians.
Meaning: To the ancient Egyptians the Collar was a symbol of the goddess Isis and worn as a protective amulet and to help the deceased in the Underworld.
The symbol of the Golden Collar became associated with the goddess Isis from the New Kingdom onwards when the spells contained in the funerary texts known as the Book of the Dead were evolved from the earlier Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts.
Spell 158 in the Book of the Dead relates to the golden collar and states, "O my father, my brother, and my mother Isis, release me, look at me, for I am one of those who should be released when Geb sees them."
Directions were given for this amuletic and protective spell to be spoken over an amuletic golden falcon collar with the spell inscribed on it.
The Golden Collar was directed to be set on the throat of the mummy on the day of interment.
The Golden Collar included the head of the falcon or hawk. Birds of prey were symbols of Horus and the kite hawk was a symbol of Isis. The collar was a stylistic representation of outstretched falcon wings, a potent symbol of protection.
The Golden Collar amulet is therefore also connected with Horus, another powerful Egyptian god, and the son of Isis. The collar amulet was also believed to secure the good-will of Horus and, when placed at the throat of the mummy on the day of the funeral it would assist the soul's journey through the underworld
This amulet was extremely rare and was apparently used to provide the deceased with the ability to discard the mummy wrappings.
A Talisman or an amulet can be described as a religious object consisting of a stone or other small item, often inscribed or carved with magical inscriptions, magic signs, magic symbols, formula or sacred text.
