Overview of Queen Ahmose
Queen Ahmose was the wife of
Pharaoh Thutmose I and the mother of the Queen-Pharaoh Hatshepsut. She witnessed great changes in ancient Egypt following the expulsion of the Hyksos 'foreign rulers' and the founding of the 18th dynasty that heralded the start of the prosperous period in ancient Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom. Fact 1 on Queen Ahmose:

She was the daughter of Pharaoh Ahmose I who founded of the 18th Dynasty of Egyptian kings and completed the expulsion of the Hyksos foreign rulers aka or "Shepherd Kings" who had introduced the horse and chariot to ancient Egypt.
 

Fact 2 on Queen Ahmose:

It new military prowess and use of the horse and chariot enabled them to build a great Egyptian Empire that would be referred to as the New Kingdom. Her father was hailed as a great military hero and the royal princess would have witnessed these great times and the establishment of the new royal dynasty at Thebes.
 

Fact 3 on Queen Ahmose:

She had several brothers and sisters and married her brother who would become Pharaoh Amenhotep I (r.1524–1503 BC).
 

Fact 4 on Queen Ahmose:

Incest was an acceptable practise amongst the kings of Egypt, in order to retain the sacred and divine bloodline - it was not practised by non-royal Egyptians.
 

Fact 5 on Queen Ahmose:

Her full name was Ahmose-Merytamun which means "Child of Moon" and she was depicted in portraits of a vigorous, beautiful woman.
 

Fact 6 on Queen Ahmose:

Her marriage to Pharaoh Amenhotep I produced 4 children: Prince Amenmose, Prince Wadjmose, Princess Neferukheb and Princess Hatshepsut.
 

Fact 7 on Queen Ahmose:

The picture above shows Queen Ahmose and Pharaoh Thutmose I with their eldest daughter Neferukheb. As the King's Principal Wife she was accorded special symbols and dress and allowed to wear the Royal Vulture Crown that consisted of a falcon feather headdress with its wings spread round her head in the act of protection. This crown associated her with the goddess Nekhbet (of Upper Egypt) and emphasized the queen's maternal role.

Fact 8 on Queen Ahmose:

Princess Hatshepsut was the only surviving child and her mother ensured that she was provided with and excellent education and practical experience of government learning from high ranking government officials
 

Fact 9 on Queen Ahmose:

Queen Ahmose was described as having been visited by the god Amun, who fathered Hatshepsut in a "shower of gold" which reflected the powerful concept of 'Divine Queenship'.
 

Fact 10 on Queen Ahmose:

She did not live to see her daughter's rise in power that culminated in her ruling Egypt as the pharaoh-queen as she died at a relatively young age.
 

Fact 11 on Queen Ahmose:

Hatshepsut honored the memory of her mother in temple reliefs as the woman who guide her to greatness in her early life.
