Overview of the Life of Queen Twosret
Queen Twosret
reigned from 1187 BC - 1186BC during the 19th dynasty of the New Kingdom. Her reign included the time of the regency of her step-son Siptah, the previous boy-pharaoh. Queen Twosret ruled during the period of history in the ancient world when the famous Battle of Troy was fought. It is believed that Queen Twosret ruled Egypt with the aid of a high ranking, wealthy, courtier known as Chancellor Bay, also called Ramesse Khamenteru. Chancellor Bay was deemed to be a traitor and possibly attempted to usurp the throne. He was subsequently put to death leaving the queen in a vulnerable position. Her reign ended in a civil war and the throne was usurped by Setnakhte who became the founder of the Twentieth dynasty. For additional facts about the royal women refer to Ancient Egyptian Queens.

Fact 1 on Twosret:

Queen Twosret was the last known ruler of the 19th Dynasty.
 

Fact 2 on Twosret:

She ruled Egypt for 6 years as the queen-regent to the boy-king heir Siptah, and then from 1187 BC until her death in 1186BC.
 

Fact 3 on Twosret:

She was a royal princess, a daughter of Pharaoh Merenptah and Takhat and sister to Pharaoh Amenmesse - refer to line of succession below.
 

Fact 4 on Twosret:

The royal princess became "Great Royal Wife" to Pharaoh Seti II but their marriage was childless. Pharaoh Seti II is believed to be the father of Siptah by one of lesser wives.
 

Fact 5 on Twosret:

When Seti II died he was placed under the guidance of his stepmother who ruled as the queen regent. Siptah was a sickly child and a medical examination of his mummy has revealed that he was deformed by polio.

When Siptah died at the age of sixteen years old the queen assumed the throne for herself and the role of Queen-Pharaoh.

The queen-regent ruled Egypt with the aid of a wealthy, foreign courtier known as Chancellor Bay, also called Ramesse Khamenteru.

Chancellor Bay possibly attempted to usurp the throne as he was denounced as a traitor to the state.

Chancellor Bay was put to death which left the Queen-Regent in a highly vulnerable position as she and Bay had made enemies and she lacked supporters.
