Definition of the 29th Dynasty
Definition: The 29th Dynasty of ancient Egypt consisted of a succession of kings from the same family who succeeded each other on the royal throne of Egypt by right of inheritance. The Kings of Egypt and pharaohs of the 29th Dynasty ruled during the time period known in ancient Egyptian history as the
Late Period.

Twenty-ninth Dynasty Dates: 393–380 B.C.E.

Fact 1 on 29th Dynasty:

The previous short-lived dynasty of the pharaoh Amyrtaois resulted in rebellion and his removal from office and execution by the founder of the next line of pharaohs, Nephrites I.
 

Fact 2 on 29th Dynasty:

Nephrites I won the throne through military force and immediately changed the power base of Egypt from the city of Sais to his home city of Mendes - refer to map below.
 

Fact 3 on 29th Dynasty:

Nephrites I adhered to Apis cult involving festivals and rituals that involved the bull-god and the Pharaoh. Religious rituals were conducted in relation to the rejuvenation of the powers of the Pharaoh and the king accompanied the bull-god in the parade and is referred to as the "Race of the Apis bull".
 

Fact 4 on 29th Dynasty:

The "Race of the Apis bull" was deemed to be an extremely important occasion and is mentioned in the Palermo Stone.
 

Fact 5 on 29th Dynasty:

Nephrites I brought some stability to the government of Egypt and took steps to and regulated trade.
 

Fact 6 on 29th Dynasty:

When Nepherites died he should have been followed by his son Muthis. But a powerful faction supported Psammuthes. Psammuthes usurped the throne but he only managed to reign for a year. He was followed by Haker.
 

Fact 7 on 29th Dynasty:

King Haker claimed to be the grandson of Nephrites I and therefore the rightful ruler of Egypt. He reigned for thirteen years during which time he initiated various building projects.
 

Fact 8 on 29th Dynasty:

King Haker was confronted by the Persian King Artaxerxes II. Haker, allied with Cyprus and Greece, fought a three year war between 385 and 383 BC and kept the Persian threat at bay with the help of Greek mercenaries.  
 

Fact 9 on 29th Dynasty:

Peace had returned to the country, but there was more political strife, and Haker was deposed by Nepherites II.
 

Fact 10 on 29th Dynasty:

Nepherites II was in turn deposed after ruling Egypt for only 4 months. He was believed to have been killed by his successor, Nectanebo I, who founded the next dynasty.
