Ancient Egyptian King - Adjib Fact Sheet

Fact 1 on Adjib:

Name: This pharaoh of ancient Egypt was also known as Anedjib, Merpubia and Enezib. His name means "Strong of Heart".

Fact 2 on Adjib:

King Adjib adopted the new title of 'Nebuy' represented by two falcons meaning "The Two Lords". This title was important. His descendents came from Thinis in Upper Egypt in the south of the country and had fought to gain power in Lower Egypt and unify the country. His name, "The Two Lords" confirmed that he was ruler of the "Two Lands". (See map Below)

Fact 3 on Adjib:

His father, King Den was the first king to be depicted wearing the Pshent double crown of Unified Egypt. King Adjib also wore this crown, again legitimizing his rule over the "Two Lands". This was necessary as there were still constant rebellions in the north of the country (Lower Egypt) disputing his claim to the throne of the unified Egypt.

Fact 4 on Adjib:

History: He ruled as the king of Egypt during the period in ancient Egyptian history known as the Early Dynastic Period and was a pharaoh of the 1st dynasty of kings by right of inheritance. He succeeded Pharaoh Den, his father, to the throne of Egypt.

Fact 5 on Adjib:

Family: His father was King Den and his mother was Queen Semat.

Fact 6 on Adjib:

Family: He married Betresh, aka Batirytes, whose status and title was the "Foremost of Women".

Fact 7 on Adjib:

Family: The names of his other wives were unknown, but it was customary for the kings of Egypt to practise Polygamy, meaning having more than one wife at the same time. Having several wives or concubines in the Royal Harem enabled the pharaoh to maintain the first dynasty and ensure the line of succession of his family.

Fact 8 on Adjib:

His wife, Betresh, was a princess of Lower Egypt and this highly political alliance was aimed at further legitimizing his role as king of the entire lands of ancient Egypt. The union produced Semerkhet, the heir to the throne.

Fact 9 on Adjib:

Statues of the pharaoh were erected in important cities in Upper and Lower. Up to this point statues were of the gods. Adjib therefore started the tradition that would be adopted by all the kings of Egypt. A significant, enduring symbol that equated the pharaohs with the gods.

Fact 10 on Adjib:

He was from the line of warrior kings and, like his predecessors, he also conducted military campaigns to gain territories and to consolidate his position.

The new government role of "seal-bearer of the king of Lower Egypt", was established by his father. This role effectively made the holder of the title the High Chancellor and second in power only to the king. The High Chancellors of ancient Egypt are often referred to as Viziers.

The name of the High Chancellor to Adjib was Nebitka.

Fact 13 on Adjib:

Fact 14 on Adjib:

His tomb in Abydos is one of the smallest of all the royal tombs, whereas the tomb of his High Chancellor Nebitka at Saqqara has been described as the forerunner of the stepped pyramid. His tomb is made of wood without the stone additions that had been used by King Den and Nebitka.
