Fact 1 on 11th Dynasty: | The rulers of the previous line of kings were based in Herakleopolis. These kings were unable to subdue the people of Upper Egypt and allowed an assault on Upper Egypt by their violent allies in the province of Asyut (see map below). The Asyut vandalized sacred tombs and corpses. These acts of sacrilege sparked conflict between the rulers in Herakleopolis in Lower Egypt and Thebes in Upper Egypt | Fact 2 on 11th Dynasty: | Thebes was triumphant led by the Theban Nomarch called Mentuhotep and the power of the Herakleopolitans declined and the rulers in Thebes were established in 2134 by Mentuhotep I. | Fact 3 on 11th Dynasty: | There is no evidence about what happened next but it is possible that Mentuhotep I died or was deposed. The Theban rulers continued with the Nomarch Intef I (2134–2118). | Fact 4 on 11th Dynasty: | There were three kings called Intef who continued to be embroiled in conflicts with the Herakleopolitans in Lower Egypt. The country was unstable and there was no central government. | Fact 5 on 11th Dynasty: | King Mentuhotep II followed the Intefs. He was a strong military leader and undertook campaigns to suppress the Nomarchs and Nomes who opposed his rule and unite the country. | Fact 6 on 11th Dynasty: | The Theban king, Mentuhotep II subdued his adversaries, and Upper and Lower Egypt was united as the Middle Kingdom. | Fact 7 on 11th Dynasty: | The unification of the lands ended the chaos of the First Intermediate Period. Mentuhotep II adopted the title of "Uniter of the Two Lands". | Fact 8 on 11th Dynasty: | The Mentuhotep line of kings reasserted the power of Egypt with the countries that bordered their lands, especially in Nubia and lands bordering Sinai. | Fact 9 on 11th Dynasty: | Conflicts continued with the Nomarchs and Herakleopolis and the Mentuhotep line of kings was weakened. | Fact 10 on 11th Dynasty: | Religion and the obsession with death and the Afterlife continued to dominate Egyptian life. The cult of Osiris continued in its popularity. | Fact 11 on 11th Dynasty: | The reign of the Mentuhoteps halted under mysterious circumstances when the Vizier Amenemhat mounted a successful palace coup and established the 12th line of kings in the Middle Period. |
