Egyptian Timeline: Prehistoric Egypt to the Old Kingdom

5000BCThe history period known as Prehistoric Egypt 5000 - 3100 BCE

Bands of hunter-gathers established small settlements flourished along the banks of the River Nile.

Farming and methods of agriculture established around the Nile.

Settlements and villages evolved into bigger towns and cities.

Prior to the first dynasty of rulers, Egypt was divided into two kingdoms, known as Upper Egypt (Ta Shemau) and Lower Egypt (Ta Mehu).

The Egyptian capital was Thinis, another important city was Abydos where kings were buried. Both cities were located in Upper Egypt (the south)

The 'Scorpion King' ruled ruled Upper Egypt based at Thinis.

Hieroglyphic form of writing was created

The ancient Egyptians had developed a calendar and system of weights and measures

Religion was based on the worship of many gods

3100BC

The history period known as the Early Dynastic Period: 3100 - 2686 BCE (1st & 2nd Dynasties)

Egypt was undergoing the process of political unification. A central government was established.

King Narmer (also refer to Menes) established the 1st Egyptian Dynasty and built the city of Memphis in Lower Egypt.

The ancient Egyptians included the practise of Human Sacrifice as part of the royal funerary rituals, but these end by the end of the first dynasty.

Hieroglyphics were developed further and use of the papyrus plant was invented by the middle of the 1st dynasty.

King Hotepsekhemwy established the 2nd Dynasty.

The history period known as the Old Kingdom 2686 - 2181 BCE (3rd - 6th Dynasties) - The Age of the Pyramids.

Notable Pharaohs were King Djoser r.2668 - 2649, Snefru aka Snefru r.2613-2589 and Khufu aka Cheops 2589 - 2566 and Unas r.2375 - 2345

The Kings adopted the divine status and role of mediator with the gods.

The Kings of Egypt started building of elaborate burial sites including pyramids and obelisks.

Egyptian kings embarked on the exploitation of gold-rich Nubia.

The 3rd Dynasty: The first Egyptian pyramid was built by Imhotep - the Step Pyramid at Saqqara for King Djoser

The 4th dynasty: The Great Pyramids of Egypt were built at Giza including the Great Pyramid of Cheops

The 5th dynasty - Egyptian religion made several important changes

King Djoser of the 3rd Dynasty reigned 2668 - 2649 BC and built the Step Pyramid at Saqqara. The site of Saqqara was to eventually house 16 pyramids.

The architecture of the Step Pyramids evolved to smooth surfaced pyramids during the 4th Dynasty of kings.

The Great pyramids of Giza were built for pharaohs Khufu (Cheops), Khafre aka Chephren and Menkaure.

2350 to 2175 B.C. The Pyramid Texts were inscribed on the walls of five of the pyramids at Saqqara. The texts are inscribed on the pyramids of King Unas of the 5th Dynasty, and King Teti, Pepi I, Merenre and Pepi II of the Sixth Dynasty.

The Pharaohs of these dynasties were based at Thebes

Aggressive military campaigns mounted against Nubia and fortresses were built along the Nile on the Nubian borders.

The Coffin Texts were created for ordinary Egyptians providing magic spells painted on wooden coffins as a guide to surviving the perils of the Underworld

The Middle Kingdom was overthrown by the invasion of the Hyksos from Asia who introduced the horse and the chariot to ancient Egypt.

1550BCThe New Kingdom 1550 -1069 BCE (18th - 20th Egyptian Dynasties)

The New Kingdom was a period of great wealth, luxury and power.

Great conquests were made of the lands of the Hittite, in Northern Syria  with trade routes to Mesopotamia, Nubia, Libya and Canaan, refer to the Ancient Egyptian Empire.

Pyramids were abandoned in favor of rock tombs in the Valley of Kings.

Egyptians aspired to a personalized version of the Book of the Dead.

The great Pharaohs included Queen Hatshepsut, Akhenaten the 'heretic pharaoh', Tutankhamun, Set I, Thutmose and Ramses the Great.

Seti I and Ramses II (Ramses the Great) are believed to have been most likely pharaohs who opposed Moses in the book of Exodus in the Bible.

Pharaoh Ahmose I r1550 BC -1525 BC expelled the Hyksos 'foreign rulers' and founded the 18th dynasty and the history time period of the New Kingdom which saw the rise of the ancient Egyptian Empire.

Queen Hatshepsut r1472 - 1457 BC initiated many trade agreements and embarked on major ambitious building projects with her architect Ineni.

Thutmose III r1479 - 1425 BC increased the empire Egypt through his military campaigns and conquests in Syria and Nubia. He was buried in the Valley of the Kings as were the most of the kings from this period in history.
